Many people love to take a hot shower before going to sleep. The only question: is sleeping with wet hair good for you? We asked our Keune hair experts. Discover the do’s and don’ts for sleeping with wet hair.

IS SLEEPING WITH WET HAIR BAD?

The Keune hair experts advise you not to go to sleep with wet hair. Your hair is a lot more fragile when it’s wet.

When your hair is wet, your hair cuticles open. This allows the water to enter. When the water stays in your hair for a long time, your hair can swell. You can compare it with roof tiles; if you blow-dry the hair smooth, your hair cuticles lie neatly over each other. When you go to sleep with wet hair, your hair cuticles go in all directions – as if the roof tiles are uneven. This is because you scrape hair all over your pillow. This will break your hair and give you a frizzy look.

In addition, sleeping with wet hair is not good for your scalp. Your scalp remains moist, causing the skin to dry out. This puts you at an increased risk of eczema.

WHAT IS THE BEST THING TO DO THEN?

DRY YOUR HAIR

If you decide to shower and wash your hair at night, make sure you have enough time to dry your hair. You can do this by, for example, taking a shower a little earlier and letting your hair dry in the open air. Or you can blow dry your hair after showering and use a good heat protectant. Also, make sure to dry your scalp well with your towel. By taking a little more time for this, you don’t have to sleep with wet hair and you keep beautiful hair.

SLEEP WITH LOOSE HAIR

But can sleep with wet hair if you put it in a braid or bun? That’s not a very wise thing to do either. It is best to sleep with loose hair. If you are going to braid it or put it in a bun, it squeezes the hair cuticles together. This prevents the moisture in your hair from evaporating. It results in dry hair and you take the elasticity out of your hair. With dry and loose hair, your hair springs back to its natural shape.

But what about the heatless waves videos on TikTok? Don’t you also make this by going to sleep with wet hair? Curling your hair with a curling iron as well as curling your hair “naturally” with wet hair is not the best thing you can do for your hair. Use a good heat protectant for your hair when you use a curling iron. Or make sure you use good care products and smooth your hair cuticles as much as possible before wrapping it around a band.

USE A SATIN PILLOWCASE

An extra tip is to use a satin pillowcase instead of a cotton pillowcase. Satin pillowcases are softer and therefore ensure that your hair chafes less on the pillowcase.

BRUSH YOUR HAIR BEFORE SHOWERING

Try to avoid brushing/combing your hair when it is wet. Therefore, brush out the tangles before showering and only brush or comb it again when it is dry. Do you still want to run a comb through it when it’s wet? Then use a wide-tooth comb.

WHEN SHOULD YOU GO TO THE HAIRDRESSER?

Many people wonder how often you should cut your hair. The average number of times you have to go to the hairdresser is between 4 and 12 weeks. This depends on the length of your hair and the needs you have. Our Keune hair experts tell you how to recognize when it’s time to go to the hairdresser.

The simplest answer is: as soon as you can no longer style your hair. In addition, you know it is time to visit the Salon when you suffer a lot of tangles. Split ends are also an indication that it is time for a haircut. You can recognize split ends when 1 hair has multiple ends, or when your hair has a white tip at the end.

To give you some guidance on how often you have to go to the hairdresser, we have listed the average for the most common situations:

Cut short hair: every 3 to 4 weeks

Cut medium hair: every 4 to 6 weeks

Cut long hair: every 12 to 14 weeks

Update regrowth: every 4 to 6 weeks

Update balayage: every 8 to 12 Weeks

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU CUT YOUR HAIR TO GROW IT?

It is preferable not to cut your hair if you want to let it grow long. However, we advise you to have your hair trimmed once every three months to keep it healthy. Your hair grows about 1 centimeter per month. By going to the hairdresser once every three months, you keep your hair healthy and it grows nicely long.

Do you suffer from a sensitive scalp and still want to dye your hair? You can. The Keune hair experts tell you what to watch out for when you dye your hair with a sensitive scalp. They also give tips on what to do if you suffer from sensitive scalp after dyeing, such as irritation and burning.

WHAT IS A SENSITIVE SCALP?

At Keune, we speak of a sensitive scalp when you suffer from redness, itching, irritation or a burning sensation. There are all sorts of factors such as air pollution, stress, vitamin deficiency or the use of (too) aggressive products that make the scalp sensitive. For healthy hair, a healthy scalp is essential.

GOING TO THE HAIRDRESSER WITH A SENSITIVE SCALP?

Don’t wash your hair three days beforehand. Your scalp is then protected by a protective layer of natural oils. This makes the hair dye less likely to irritate your scalp. An extra tip: do not wash your hair too often and do not use too hot water. The scalp is very sensitive and can easily dry out. This also ensures that the colour lasts longer. So it’s a win-win situation! When washing your hair, use a shampoo for sensitive scalps, like our Care Derma Sensitive Shampoo. This shampoo does not affect your colour.

Tell your hairdresser if you suffer from a sensitive scalp. They can then use products for sensitive scalps. Before or during colouring, the hairdresser can apply a caring lotion or spray. This will help soothe the scalp. After dyeing, they may choose to wash out your hair twice with an after colour shampoo so that no excess product is left in your hair. Afterwards, they can apply a nourishing mask or leave-in product for hydration.

WHICH HAIR DYE IS SUITABLE FOR A SENSITIVE SCALP?

The hairdresser will choose an appropriate hair colour for sensitive scalps, such as an ammonia-free hair colour. Do you go to a Keune salon? Then ask about our So Pure Color or Semi Color. So Pure Color is a vegan and plant-based hair dye. It contains nourishing protein for healthy hair and is rich in vitamins A and E to strengthen hair and scalp. Keune’s Semi Color is a demi permanent hair colour. It contains natural ingredients such as ‘Boswellia serrata’, ‘gum’ and ‘bisabolol’ to protect and soothe the scalp. These botanical ingredients reduce inflammation and itching of the scalp.

WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF AN ALLERGIC REACTION TO HAIR DYE?

Before having your hair dyed, we recommend scheduling an allergy test at the hairdresser’s. The test involves smearing a bit of hair dye behind your ear or on the inside of your arm. For the next two days, keep an eye on how your skin reacts. Do you have no redness, itching, irritation or burning sensation? Then you can get your hair dyed. Do you get an allergic reaction after the allergy test? Don’t worry, chances are you can still dye your hair. Look for a solution together with your hairdresser. For example, the colour can be applied less close to the scalp, such as with a balayage.

If you experience itching or burning during dyeing, tell your hairdresser right away. The hairdresser can rinse out the dye right away. It can also happen that you have an allergic reaction after dyeing. An allergic reaction can occur suddenly and can have many different reasons. Factors such as pollution, stress, a vitamin deficiency or the use of (too) aggressive products can make the scalp sensitive. Symptoms vary from person to person. Do you experience severe itching, irritation or a severe burning sensation? If so, make an appointment with a dermatologist. In the meantime, take extra care of your scalp with our Care Derma Sensitive Lotion or Care Vital Nutrition Protein Spray. Brush your hair gently and sit on it as little as possible.

WHICH PRODUCTS DO WE RECOMMEND FOR A SENSITIVE SCALP?

If you suffer from a sensitive scalp, not all hair products are suitable. Using Keune products specifically for sensitive scalps can actively combat redness, itching, inflammation and irritation. Use mild shampoos for sensitive scalps and alternate with a colour shampoo once a week:

Derma Sensitive Shampoo

Color Brillianz Shampoo

Tinta Color Shampoo

This will keep your scalp moisturised and your colour longer. So you don’t have to go to the hairdresser as often, which is better for your scalp. Use a conditioner or hair mask after washing. Between washes, you can give your scalp extra care with our nourishing lotion or spray:

Derma Sensitive Conditioner

Derma Sensitive Mask

Derma Sensitive Lotion

Vital Protein Spray

Healthy Hair Tips By Keune. Credits: Keune.com

New year, fresh hair! A new year is the perfect time to establish new and healthy habits. Exercise more, eat healthier and live more consciously. Your hair and scalp also require a recharge. Beautiful and healthy hair starts with proper care. Start the year off right with a hair detox. In this article you will discover what hair detox is, what treatments are available and what you can do yourself at home for healthy hair.

WHAT DOES A HAIR DETOX DO?

There are several reasons why your hair craves a detox. Using insufficient hair care, taking hot showers and dry shampoo can unbalance your hair and scalp. As a result, hair breakage, dandruff or hair loss can occur. Detoxing your scalp helps remedy these common problems.

A hair detox is an intensive hair care treatment that restores hair and soothes the scalp. It stimulates cell renewal and creates the perfect foundation for your hair care and hair styling. Did you know that healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp? Gentle scalp care also helps prevent inflammation and reduce itchy, dry or irritated skin.

DETOX HAIR TREATMENT IN THE SALON

Hair care is self-care. Beautiful and resilient hair makes you feel like you can take on the world. It starts with a clean canvas and proper care of the scalp. After all, this is an important prerequisite for healthy locks.

Start the new year with a fresh start. One of the salon’s customized hair detox treatments will give you a fresh cut again. There are three treatments, your hairdresser will gladly advise you which treatment your hair and scalp need.

1. THE REGENERATE

Do you find hairs of your own everywhere? You are not the only one suffering from hair loss. It can have several causes. From stress and hormonal changes to dieting and pregnancy. In most cases, hair loss is temporary. This treatment boosts your hair and stimulates hair growth.

2. THE ULTIMATE NOURISHMENT

Exposure to heat or coloring your hair can make it drier. Sometimes there is little you can do about it, as it may be genetically determined that you have dry hair. Fortunately, you can do something about it. Namely, detox your hair with this ultimate nourishing treatment. Your locks will regain their beautiful shine.

3. THE DETOX

Dry shampoo and other styling products can stay on your scalp. This can lead to flaking, dryness and itching. The Detox helps cleanse the hair, removes product residue and refreshes the scalp.

These treatments are available from January 1st. Find a salon near you and ask about detox treatments!

AFTERCARE

After the detox treatment in the salon, your scalp is soothed and your hair is nourished again. To prolong the results and maintain the healthy balance of your scalp, it is important to follow up the treatment at home with proper hair care. With over fifteen lines for healthy hair and scalp, you will always find the perfect match to optimally cleanse, condition and treat your hair.

HOW DO YOU DETOX YOUR HAIR AT HOME?

Dry shampoo and dry conditioner are just the products to set aside during your detox. Scale back washing your hair to twice a week. And limit the use of your blow dryer and other styling tools.

Stretching the time between shampoos can be good for your hair, but it can also mean you’re building up too much product at your roots. When you wash your hair, make sure you completely detox your scalp and hair by removing this product buildup. With a deep cleanse, you will ensure a healthy foundation for the rest of your style.

KEUNE DERMA FOR A HEALTHY SCALP

How do you care for a beard? Many men take a beard for granted. Nothing could be further from the truth! Good beard care is very important the moment you want to have a beautiful beard. Just as you care for your hair and scalp, your beard has the same need. Our Keune hair experts will tell you how best to maintain a beard. With the following 5 tips, you will create the best beard care for your beard.

1. WASH YOUR BEARD WITH SHAMPOO

A beautiful beard starts with clean skin, just like your hair and scalp. The advice is to wash your beard with shampoo 2-3 times a week with a shampoo for men. You can use a normal shampoo in your beard care. Our favorite is 1922 by J.M. Keune Essential Shampoo. This is an all-in-one shampoo that you can use for hair, body, and beard.

2. DON’T WASH YOUR BEARD TOO HOT

When you wash your beard, it is important to pay attention to the temperature of the water (this also applies to your regular hair, by the way). When the water is too hot, it dries out your skin and deteriorates the quality of your beard hair. It also causes your beard to break off faster and makes it feel itchy. To properly maintain your beard, the tip is to keep the shower around 38 Celcius degrees.

3. USE A BEARD OIL

A must-have in your beard care is good beard oil. In addition to smelling great, beard oil also provides extra care. Beard oil contains nutrients that make your beard stronger. It also makes your beard feel softer and shinier. It will prevent itching and irritation, and your beard will become easier to style.

It is best to apply beard oil immediately after shampooing. That’s when your hair cuticles are still open and it’s easier for oil to penetrate. This will seal the beard hairs nicely and protect your beard from external influences.

4. COMB YOUR BEARD

For the maintenance of your beard, it is good to comb your beard regularly. It is common for your beard hairs to get a little tangled and stand in the wrong direction. This can cause a prickly and itchy feeling. By combing your beard in the direction where the hair follicles go, you take away the irritation. Use a fine comb for this, so you take all the beard hairs with you while combing.

5. EXTRA BEARD CARE TIP FROM THE EXPERTS

Do you have a full beard and want to add some extra strength? Then you can use a beard balm. A beard balm is a light conditioner and gives a slight firmness with a natural finish. This will allow you to style your beard more easily.

For years, balayage has been immensely popular. This is mainly because balayage gives a natural sun-kissed effect to the hair. It is a natural and low-maintenance technique that is customized for each hair type.

WHAT IS BALAYAGE EXACTLY?

The word “balayage” comes from the French language and is translated as “sweeping.” The hairdresser, therefore, applies balayage with light sweeps on the hair surface. During the color treatment, the hairdresser works with different color shades that blend into each other. Depending on your wishes this either gives a subtle or a more expressive result.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BALAYAGE AND HIGHLIGHTS?

You find the difference in the method of application and in the effect the coloring has. With highlights, people often refer to the blonde sections that are placed from the scalp in the hair with foils or foam foils. Highlights give more depth to the hair. Balayage, on the other hand, is applied freehand in the hair and usually begins only a few inches from the scalp. Because of this technique, the color transition looks very natural and you get a sun-kissed effect without the outgrowth being very noticeable.

WHAT COLOR BALAYAGE SUITS YOU BEST?

A balayage is possible for almost every color of hair and length. The right color for you depends on your current hair color and skin tone, and of course the effect you have in mind. It may be that you want certain accents in your face to stand out more. A hairdresser can use different techniques for this.

Ask your hairdresser for advice and read our tips on how to find out which hair color suits you best.

HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR BALAYAGE?

Do you want to keep your hair color as beautiful as when you just left the salon? Then the advice is to visit the salon regularly to put a toner treatment on your lighter locks.

At home, it’s important to choose a product that meets the needs of your hair. Is it dry? Then choose a moisturizing hair mask. Does your hair turn yellow quickly? Then choose a good silver shampoo. Also, lifted hair is more vulnerable to damage from the sun. A hair protector with UV protection keeps the quality of the hair good and prevents the hair from becoming dry. Don’t you have that much time, but still want to take care of your hair? Then you can always opt for a leave-in hair product. This doesn’t need to be rinsed out and provides all-day care.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

HOW LONG DOES A BALAYAGE TAKE?

Setting a balayage can take several hours. Usually around 2 hours, but depending on your needs it can take longer.

HOW MUCH DOES A BALAYAGE COST?

Each salon uses its own rates and therefore the cost of a balayage can vary a lot. In addition, the length of your hair and your wishes also influence the price.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU TOUCH UP A BALAYAGE?

A balayage is very low maintenance and the need for touch-ups depends on how quickly you feel the effect needs to be improved. Because of the natural effect, a balayage only needs to be touched up every 2 to 4 months.

Healthy Hair Tips By Keune. Credits: Keune.com

We live in a time that we embrace the natural texture of our hair. That means we don’t straighten our curls every day with a flat iron. We rock our curls! We help you discover what type of curl you have and which products are best to use.

HOW DO DIFFERENT TYPES OF CURLS COME ABOUT?

What type of curls you have depends on several factors; your DNA, the shape of your hair follicles, and the way your hair falls. First, the genotype in your DNA determines what type of hair you have. In addition, the shape of your hair follicles affects the shape of your hair. When the hair follicles are oval in shape, it results in curls. This is because the hair has to come out of the hair follicle at a sharper angle. People with rounder hair follicles have straighter hair that also stays flatter on the head. Finally, curl types are determined by the shape of the hair itself. While some strands of hair are wavy next to each other, other strands of hair wind around each other. So it may very well be that you have different types of curls.

THE FAMOUS CURL CHART

A curl type is often defined using the Curl Chart. There are four types of curls that we indicate with the numbers 1 to 4. In which 1 is the straightest and 4 the most curled. Within each variety, you still have a difference in how tight or lose a curl is. This is indicated by letters. For example, A is a looser curl than a C.

CURL TYPE 2 – WAVY HAIR

Curl type 2 is not completely straight and not completely curled. We also call it wavy hair:

CURL TYPE 2A

Curl type 2A is the loosest wave and is usually characterized by a handful of light curves in the hair. They have little volume and can be easily straightened.

CURL TYPE 2B

Curl type 2B tends more toward the S-shape of a curl, especially in the tips of the hair. Still lays flat on the scalp.

CURL TYPE 2C

Curl type 2C comes closest to curly hair. Many people with curl type 2C have coarse wavy hair with a few sections of curls.

Curl type 2 celebrities include Lorde and Kate Hudson.

Product Recommendation: Look for a product designed to add grip and texture to accentuate the wave. Think sea salt sprays and texturizers, such as Style Salt Mousse and the Style Salt Mist.

CURL TYPE 3 – CURLY HAIR

Curl type 3 ranges from a light curl to a full curl and usually has a combination of textures. Compared to curl type 2, curl type 3 has more height and volume.

CURL TYPE 3A

Curl type 3A has a loose S-shaped spiral that you often have to give volume to yourself.

CURL TYPE 3B

Curl type 3B also has an S-shaped spiral but more volume than curl type 3A.

CURL TYPE 3C

Curl type 3C are tight spiral curls that are close together.

Curl type 3 celebrities include Rihanna and Alicia Keys.

Product Recommendation: Look for a product specifically designed to add definition and hydration, such as the Style Curl Cream.

CURL TYPE 4 – KINKY HAIR

Curl type 4 is the curliest hair type that is characterized by a lot of volumes, but is also fragile and dry. Curl type 4 often refers to afro hair.

CURL TYPE 4A

Curl type 4A has an S-shaped spiral and is very resilient.

CURL TYPE 4B

Curl type 4B has a Z shape that is bent at sharp angles.

CURL TYPE 4C

Curl type 4C resembles curl type 4B but forms a tighter curl which makes the hair more vulnerable.

Curl Type 4 celebrities include Viola Davis and Willow Smith.

Product recommendation: Look for a product that provides intensive nourishment to the hair and makes coarse or frizzy hair smooth and supple, such as the Lumi Coat Supreme Cream.

Would you like nothing more than more volume in your hair? We understand that all too well. It is not very difficult to get more volume in your hair, you just have to put in some effort. Our Keune hair experts give you tips on how to give your hair more volume.

HOW DO YOU GET MORE VOLUME IN YOUR HAIR?

It is known that certain hair structures have more volume of their own than others. With curls, for example, you naturally have more volume in your hair than people with straight hair. However, it is not impossible to get more volume in your hair if you have thin or straight hair. These are the tips for more volume in your hair:

1. GET THE RIGHT HAIRCUT

You can’t cut the volume in your hair, but you can make sure your haircut is suitable for creating more volume. For example, all shoulder-length hairstyles already have more volume. With longer hair, your hair becomes heavier and you have to put in more effort to get volume in your hair. Ask your hairdresser for personal advice on which haircut suits you best.

2. USE THE RIGHT PRODUCTS

Do you have long hair, or do you just want to give your hair the extra wow-effect? Use good hair products that give extra volume. When you apply these hair products to towel-dried hair and then blow-dry your hair, you get the volume in your hair that you want. If you want to add volume to dry hair, use a volume powder or dry shampoo.

3. BLOW-DRY VOLUME IN YOUR HAIR

Blow drying is the ultimate tip for more volume in your hair! If you let your hair dry, you won’t get volume. The hair then takes its natural shape. If you want more volume, spray the Keune Root Volumizer on the roots of your hair and put a mousse on the lengths of your hair. Then hang upside down and blow-dry your hair. Are you a little handy? In that case, you can also dry your hair while styling it with a brush at the same time. If you have curly hair, use a diffuser on your blowdryer. With this, you simply give more definition to your curls.

Every day millions of people have their hair bleached at the hairdresser for incredible blonde hair. To keep the hair permanently radiant, it is important to take good care of bleached hair. We asked our blonde experts for tips on caring for blonde hair and which Keune products are best to use.

THE IMPORTANCE OF TAKING CARE OF BLEACHED HAIR

We are the last to claim that dyeing your hair is 100% good for your hair. It is and remains a chemical treatment. When bleaching, your hairdresser removes the natural pigments from the hair by opening the cuticle layers of the hair. This changes the pH level and the inner structure of the hair. To restore your hair, it is important to take good care of your hair after bleaching. Only then will you get a perfect long-lasting result.

PRODUCTS FOR THE BEST HAIR CARE AFTER BLEACHING

Keune Blonde Savior. The scientists from the Keune Lab have worked for years on these products to care for bleached hair. Their goal went beyond just making blonde hair look great. The Blonde Savior products penetrate the hair to repair the hair from the inside. For example, it contains essential ingredients to keep blonde hair healthy and to compensate for all damage caused during bleaching. Glycolic acid is super important for the hydration of the hair. Creatine strengthens and restores bonds after bleaching, making hair stronger and healthier.

Surfer girls are famous for their model bodies, unbeatable tan, and water gliding skills. It is often true that their locks also look spectacular.

Have you ever wondered why or how this could be possible if seawater is claimed to be so notoriously damaging for your mane?

The truth is that salty water in moderate amounts could have unparalleled benefits to your hair’s overall health. When excessive exposure takes place, though, certain precautions and an extensive moisturizing routine should be implemented.

The Ultimate Win for Sea Water Are the Beach Waves

Beauty enthusiasts with various hair textures could agree upon one universal outcome of seawater: it makes your hair wavy. Styling products and heating tools become unnecessary with the miracle results of salty curls.

Full of minerals, sea water’s salts bind with your hair’s crosslinks to create the dreamy beach waves that are also voluminous and easy to maintain.

Scalp Nourishment on Point

Saltwater can supply your body with one of the most powerful stress reducers: magnesium. Absorbed through the pores of your scalp, this essential mineral will help you feel calmer, which in turn will speed up your hair growth.

Another property of seawater that enhances the livelihood of your tresses is exfoliation. For maximum benefit, you should try to gently massage your scalp with sea salts, encouraging blood circulation while removing unwanted product residue.

Grease Remover & Bio Shampoo

The oily scalp bearers could finally take a break with a refreshing ocean dip. It will not only strip all the excess grease but could be used as a natural alternative to dry shampoo. Both your body and your wallet will be grateful.

People in the other extreme, with extremely dry & flaky scalps, could also enjoy the antibacterial properties of saltwater. Dandruff caused by fungus could be defeated, as osmosis will be a lot harder, and the spread will slowly dissipate.

When is Saltwater NOT Recommendable?

Suppose you already have dry, brittle, flat locks. In that case, saltwater may not be ideal for you, as it will

worsen the moisture deprivation you are suffering from. This could lead to undesirable outcomes, such as breakage and split ends.

Chemically treated manes should also have minimal exposure to seawater. When your hair underwent the respective chemical procedure, it lost some of its essential structure. Dryness could be further perpetuated by saltwater, leaving your tresses lifeless.

3 Quick Tips to Prevent Sea Water Damage

If you love going for a dip but often feel guilty because you care about your locks, you are not alone. Surfer girls could not relate more. Yet, they have managed to implement some impeccable rituals to keep their tresses healthy while riding the waves.

1. Dampen your hair with regular H2O before delving into the ocean.

Think of your mane as a sponge. It absorbs whatever it gets in contact with first. You can trick your strands into wicking all the clean water before jumping into the sea. This way, they will be less vulnerable to it.

2. Lather your tresses with coconut oil before going for a dip.

3. Deep moisturize after each beach session.

Every surfer gal swears by her most cherished post-beach hair mask. Choose according to your hair texture and lifestyle preferences.
